3M worked with Groove Jones to demonstrate the hanging capabilities of Command™ Brand, in a captivating manner. The goal was to use augmented reality to help inspire consumers with what they can hang from Command™ Damage-Free Hanging Solutions, highlighting the hook’s strength and utility. The desired outcome was to enable users to virtually hang various items on different surfaces using the Command™ 10 lb X-Large Utility Hook, and be demonstrated at CES.

Groove Jones created the “Command™ Brand — Hang On AR Experience” accessible through a customized web page initiated by scanning a QR code within the 3M CES booth. The experience was designed to offer users a seamless, multifaced journey through three primary stages.

Upon scanning the QR code, users access a personalized web page featuring a 3D view showcasing the Command™ 10 lb. X-Large Hook in detail. When the “Hang On” Experience is initiated, users learn how to prep the hanging surface, remove adhesive strips, apply the strips to the hook, and appropriately stick the hook to the wall.

They are next presented with a selection of 3D objects to hang on different surfaces virtually.

The process involves:

  • Selecting an item to hang. Users can choose from a gym bag, backpack, beach chair, caution sign, guitar, ironing board, step stool, coat, wires, and briefcase.
  • Watching as the chosen item animated onto the hook to demonstrate its hanging capabilities.

Below are examples of items that the user can select and “Hang On” to the Command™ 10 lb. X-Large Utility Hooks.

Transitioning to the AR segment, users activate their device’s backward-facing camera. After they’ve chosen an object to hang, tap “View on your wall.”When the wall is detected from the phone’s camera, the user is able to tap the Command™ Hook with the chosen object to have it virtually installed to the wall.

The AR Camera Filter Effect development was tailored to function smoothly on current-generation iOS and Android mobile devices, ensuring compatibility across popular mobile web browsers.

The experience is intended as part of a future program to digitize 3M products and integrate interactive experiences onto their site and 3rd party partner retailers. By using AR, retailers are increasing time on site, increasing a customer’s understanding of a product, to, in turn, increase conversion and sales.
